These were our children, the best of our lives, the only reason we needed to keep on fighting 

There's not a word in English (I don't think) for the feeling of happiness that comes from it's a particular kind of feeling. Diamond grew up in a very clannish culture, and it certainly has it's benefits for mental health. Not so great for acceptance of strangers, but they were at war, and nobody had acceptance high on their priority list.
